pine cone wreaths by gwen

Welcome!

The pinecone wreaths pictured on this website are unique. Each one is created from all natural materials and each piece is either wrapped or drilled and wired by hand to a wire frame (no glue is used). As you can see, the wreaths are so beautiful they can be displayed year-round. They are especially attractive during the holiday season and can be enhanced with boughs of holly, evergreen and ribbon. The materials used are pinecones in various shapes and sizes, nuts in shells and a variety of pods.

A variety of pine cones are used and include Douglas Fir, Japanese Black Pine, Ponderosa Pine, Scotch Pine, Norway Spruce, Colorado Blue Spruce and Sitka Spruce.

The variety of pods used includes Jacaranda, Sweet Gum with their whimsical tails, Cypress, Bell Eucalyptus, Mega Caps Eucalyptus, Tuart Eucalyptus, Beech Burrs and Red Bottle pods.

A variety of nuts in the shell are used and include walnuts, pecans, acorns, hazelnuts, Brazil nuts, and almonds.

The process in readying the materials for the wreaths is painstaking. The first step is finding and harvesting them. Harvesting varies with each variety of cone or pod. After gathering the cones or pods, each is washed with soapy water and a brush, then dried in the sun. This process applies to all materials with the exception of the nuts that are purchased from the local market. Upon completion, the wreaths are sprayed with clear enamel.
